living the life...

My photo
don't ask me how i made it to dallas all the way from the east coast of florida... but i am a junior at smu and i am loving it! i have the best family and friends i could ever ask for. i am one of the most competitive people you'll ever meet and i will also be honest with anyone when ever they ask me for my opinion. i enjoy doing pretty much anything... watching and playing sports (especially basketball, football and volleyball) and i love meeting new people. i am amazed by every aspect of life. i don't understand why i have been given so many fortunate opportunities... i don't deserve them but i will do my best to experience life to it's fullest! as i said earlier, i have the most amazing family, sorority sisters and friends... i wouldn't be here without them! i hope you enjoy my blog... it might not be that impressive but please know that i am just a beginning blogger. have fun!

what could this mean?

what does this picture mean? is it saying that the brands pictured are just as dependent on mankind as this baby is? i think that this picture is wonderfully graphic. it reminds me of the United Colors of Benetton approach to advertising. This picture allows you to think for yourself...
I also noticed that this ad might be trying to prove that all of these labels are trying to benefit mankind and that they would never be harmful to anyone... especially a young child nursing: one of the most natural human miracles.
what do you think?

what in the world is a jayhawk... tarheel?

okay... i am the sports fan that i am because of the sports-based household i was raised in. no, sports weren't forced upon me, but every night when i would get home from school and practice, but dad would be watching some kind of game or sportscenter/espn show. my dad played basketball at Kansas... he was a jayhawk. my mom went to UNC- chapel hill and was a tarheel. i was a huge basketball fan of both of these schools but it just dawned on me the other day that i dont know that those two mascots are in real life.

the jayhawk is a mythical bird with an amazing history (i guess that i will never know what this mascot is in real life). the name combines two birds-the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter. the message here: Do not turn your back on this bird.

the tarheel is a term that came from north carolina's abundant tar country. the tar, pitch and turpentine were all over north carolina's pine country. when in battles, north carolinians were called "tarheels" because of their tar-covered feet.
i thought that this lesson that i learned was pretty cool. for some reason i never thought about what the terms actually meant... at least my kids will know exactly what a mustang is!

Ford Edge commercial - Faster than a BMW X5

even though this commercial seems well substantiated and ethical, i dont feel that i would really pay attention to it if i saw it on tv. yes, a lot of peoples' dream car is the bmw x5 but people that are in the market for an suv probably aren't going to care that much about how fast their car is... and they might be even more turned off when the bmw x5 is brought up because they are reminded that they can't afford the more expensive car

Greatest Toyota Advertisement

this is worse than the "divorce mobile" advertisement i blogged about before! first of all, i understand the exact situation this girl is in with her father... her father sat down with her to talk about the fact that she has fallen in love... normally my father is cleaning his shotgun at that point. but, once he saw the corolla, he immediately liked the supposed guy that would be inside... little did he know it was a girl. interesting and scandalous commercial, toyota!

White Stripes Coke Commercial

I found intertextuality in this coke commercial because of Jack White's White Stripes. To someone that was a fan of his, from the 1990's on, this ad would be meaningful and cultural. the ad would create meaning. The jingle that the song sings is It’s the right thing to do, and you know it, It’s inside of you, so just show it, love is the truth.” meaning that "the coke side of life" is the right thing to do. the song was written to send the message of love out to the world. that concept is heard continuously and will continue to be... it is comforting to people

Jockey Underwear Commercial 1983

Jim Palmer! Oriols! I told you i was a sports fan! I never knew that he did jockey ads! how funny is that ad... just think back to the time when we were born (mid 1980's)... imagine what the commercials would have looked like! how cheesy! palmer seems to be so "genuine" and "truthful". Do we think the same of advertising today?

Volkswagen DSG Transmission -

my only wish... the kid on the right should have been shown laying on his back "passed out" after the commercial was over... then the ad could have said something like "this car will leave your breathless"... (okay, obviously i am new into the adv world... don't criticize my creativity haha!)
one of my favorite commercials by far! how clever!

Mustang Monday!!!

Being involved with New Student Programs (NSP) I am a big advocate for coming to SMU to visit the campus before and after you have been accepted because I will almost guarantee it that you will fall in love with the campus. When I was in high school I didn't want to go very far away from home and when my parents forced me to go to SMU's campus, my search was immediately over... I bought into the campus and the overwhelming strong presence of the school. Well, this Monday (tomorrow) is Mustang Monday where all newly accepted high school seniors are invited to come to campus and spend the night with student ambassadors in their dorm rooms. It really gives the high school senior a chance to see what life is really like here and will (hopefully) coax them into making the right decision (...SMU!).
My only concern about the event taking place tomorrow is the weather... I really hope that this freezing weather and nasty rain goes away! Please encourage all of the high school seniors you know that are debating on whether or not to come to SMU to visit the campus!

celebrate. remember. fight back!

$115,000... that's a lot of money, isn't it? yes, i think so... that is the amount of money last year's Relay For Life raised on SMU's campus for American Cancer Society. this is an organization that is really close to my heart and i have been involved with the program for the past eight years. last year i was on SMU's Relay For Life Board as the activities and entertainment co-chair. this year i am the head of the 2008 event. i am so excited for all for all of the event and i really want more participation that ever. SMU's Relay, last year, was the largest fundraising college event for ACS! it was great! i want to do it even bigger this year! This years theme for the event is CELEBRATE. REMEMBER. FIGHT BACK! and i think that it fits perfectly. i am going to fight for more and i am not going to stop until cancer is eliminated. if any of you would like to participate in this event, please go to www.smurfl.org. the date of the event is april 11th-12th. it is an overnight event resembling the idea that cancer never sleeps to neither will we when we are fighting it.
PLEASE HELP SUPPORT!

or is this what people really think of her?

...interesting picture of hillary...
if she wins, is this how she is going to be in the white house? although i am apathetic when it comes to the election, is america really ready for a woman on the hill? is she going to be speaking too much of what her husband accomplished and try to do what he didn't accomplish? ...this is another woman being skeptical of her... maybe i could be proven wrong once election time comes around... we will see!

Hillary and the Band

interesting campaign commercial, huh? i haven't ever seen anything like this and i thought that it was a strong approach to gain young adults' attention

india... what?

so, here at SMU, an opportunity was given to students to travel to India this summer to take advertising classes and to travel around the area of Ahmedabad. Because I am a junior and just getting into my advertising major, i became very interested in this opportunity because it presents me with the only summer program where i could get six hours of advertising classes accomplished. my interest was also sparked because who goes to india on a study abroad program? normally students go to london, paris, australia... but india?! really?! i don't think that i would ever go to india if it wasn't for this and one of my best friends growing up is from there so i am really excited to see what it is like and to learn about the culture! please let me know if you have ever been there or if you are interested in going on the trip! the trip is open to all students, not just advertising students and non-SMU students can attend, too!
here's the map of the area:

how different and cool? i am really excited, but nervous in anticipation at the same time! come!

reverted...

so over christmas break i think that i reverted to my childhood. i remember it like it was yesterday, sitting in my first grade classroom engulfed in a book that my favorite teacher was reading to my whole class. i remember thinking: how can she pronounce those weird words? how can she even read so well? will i ever be able to read that well? is the BFG real?
well... i reread the BFG over christmas break... sitting out by the pool and on the beach, i took a step back in time to see if i got anything more out of that reading than just a cute story about a little girl and a friendly giant. i realized that i now saw things in that book that i never picked up on before. i saw lessons of treating people with kindness and how to have an open mind to new experiences. it seems as though, at a young age, kids have so much more bravery than we do as adults or young adults. Sophie, the little girl in the book, was scared at first but she learned to trust the giant and appreciate him for who he was... i am not sure i would be able to do that today.
now, i know that i am looking at this from a ridiculous point, but think about your experiences as a child compared to today. they will probably be a little more reserved.

why can they be on there?

so the idea that parents can be on facebook bothers me... i don't know why. i just think that it is a place for young people, in college or recently graduated. when facebook opened up to high school i thought that was weird, and now those kids have taken over the entire concept.
yes, i know that i am taking this shirt literally and not for the joke behind it... (and by the way i think that those jokes are dumb) but who would even care if "i facebooked their mom"? i am friends with a lot of people on facebook that i know but not well at all... it is a networking thing. you can get into contact with people really easily and quickly. so what if i wanted to get into touch with your mom quickly? wouldn't it be nice to be able to facebook her? no insult there...

more about dogs...

THE BEST AD EVER! as you saw below, i love dogs... especially golden retrievers!!! watch this ad... it is so great and you will love it too! (hopefully)

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!

so... please excuse some of my postings below... i just now figured out how to put youtube videos on my blog! now there aren't anymore links! everyone needs time to learn... i am getting better at this! does anyone know if i would be able to go back through those and post the youtube videos correctly?

memories come rolling back...

between my english class and now just having seen this advertisement in one of my adv classes, i am really learning how to read into what i am presented. in my english class we are learning about different techniques of readers response critiques. we are supposed to read poems and stories and then relate them to our lives. when i first saw this commercial memories inadvertently came rushing back to me... from my ex boyfriend. his two favorite things in the world are soccer and surfing... the only reason i know who any of the guys in this video is because of him...
i broke up with him but i just dont like to be reminded of him and his likings at all...
does this ever happen to any of you? how can you get around it?

what life is all about...

so as you can see, life is something that is very important to me. i was doodling in class today and was trying out my cursive. i ended up drawing the word "life" and i thought about the way it looked... it was very roundabout. I then thought about how life was very roundabout. you never know where you are going to go next in life... it's like a rollercoaster.
so since i had to hand in the paper which i was doodling on (but dont worry, i crossed out the doodles...) I recreated the doodling on word...
think about it. you really do not know where life is going to take you... keep on a smile on your face and warmth in your heart

dog lover

So I got the following message in an email from one of my best friends and I loved it...
Dog's Purpose, (from a 6-year-old)
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish
Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their
little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping
for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we
couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia
procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be
good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though
Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family
surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time,
that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away..

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty
or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering
aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned
me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life
-- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The
six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they
don't have to stay as long.'

Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply..
Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure
ecstasy.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them
gently.
Being always grateful for each new day and for the blessing you have.
ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!
That's what dog's teach us...

Being a dog person, I totally loved this but if you really think about all of those positive thoughts a dog can "teach" us it can really make a difference. If anything, those comments will make you smile and that is what counts most! A picture of my dog is at the top. Her name is Khaki.
